Linux 3 Released !

10:01 AM

Linus Torvalds, the initiator and manager of the Linux kernel, has been officially call the next version of Linux kernel as Linux 3. It was inaugurated by Linus in his post on the Linux Kernel Mailing List as quoted from Phoronix, Tuesday (31/05/2011).

"I decided to just bite the bullet, and call the next version 3.0. It will get released close enough to the 20-year mark, which is excuse enough for me, although honestly, the real reason is just that I can no longer comfortably count as high as 40". Linus Torvalds.

Figures 40 is referred to the latest Linux version of kernel that should touch the number 2.6.40. This change had previously been discussed Linus in the same mailing list.

As the main organizer linux kernel, Torvalds does seem to have some 'right prerogratif'. Included in this set a new numbering. But this time he was sure his decision will be welcomed by the community.

Unfortunately, said Torvalds, scripts and rules to the Makefile can not be arbitrarily dictated. As a result, the kernel is technically will have the names 3.0.0-RC1 (RC1 is a release candidate, because it is still not final). Torvalds says there's still time 6-7 weeks to perform cleaning and other scripts. Hence, in the final release of the Linux kernel that can be named 3.0.

Linus Torvalds was warned that Linux 3.0 does not have a massive change. "Nothing is broken, no new features are scary, there's no variety like that," he said. Since several years the Linux kernel releases have been made based on the time and not based on features. The reason for this change was considered more precise about timing, ie the 20 th anniversary.

Some things that will be included in Linux 3 among others, including statements to the ARM processor-based systems, improvements to the Virtual Machine to support Kinect (Microsoft Kinect Linux Driver).

"So be nice to me, and send me only really important fixes. And let's make sure we really make the next release not just an all new shiny number, but a good kernel too". Linus Torvalds.

You are great man, good job !

Install Ubuntu 11.04 on SATA Hard Drives

    7:18 AM

We used to have problem while tried to install Ubuntu on SATA Hard Drives (RAID), some problem happen because of the ubuntu installer didn't recognize properly the Hard Drives, See one of the following questions :

I'm trying to setup a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. I added a new drive which is identical to the windows 7 is installed on. When I run ubuntu 11.04 on the LiveCD I can see and mount the second drive and edit it in Partition Software (Gparted), so I setup some partition which will be used by Ubuntu 11.04 including swap, then start the installation.
I have an error during installation, i guest this cause 'this live CD' didn't recognize / can't find my HDD (SATA HDD), anyone find any solution ?

Did you ever experienced this ?
Regarding to question above, we find some usefull tips which usually work on the previous ubuntu version, following how to install Ubuntu 11.04 on Sata Hard Drives bellow

You can boot a live session as usually then enter terminal session, to enter terminal session you can press CTRL+ALT+F1 (you can replace F1 with F2, F3 .. F10), then type this command to your terminal
    sudo os-prober
You'll probably see a probing error which could be the reason why your drive is not taken in consideration. It's quite likely that your second drive (where Ubuntu 11.04 will be installed) has leftovers of a RAID configuration, you can solve the problem using this command
    sudo dmraid -rE
    * (-r = raid, -E remove metadata) and confirm the operation.

After finished some action above back to the "GUI" session (press CTRL+ALT+F1). Then start the installation, Ubuntu 11.04 Installer should recognize your hard drive now.

What is Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) Mean ?

      12:27 PM

hai readers, Did you know what's LTS in the end of ubuntu release mean ? (Example : Ubuntu 8.08 LTS), if is not, Let's me give a little explaination. LTS is sort of Long Term Support, the LTS attach in every ubuntu release version which have 3 years official support from cononical, support that i mean is everything about that version including application, repository, question and answer or others.

A new LTS version is usually released every 2 years. With the Long Term Support (LTS) version you get 3 years support on Ubuntu Desktop, and 5 years on Ubuntu Server. There is no extra fee for the LTS version; we make our very best work available to everyone on the same free terms. Upgrades to new versions of Ubuntu are and always will be free of charge.

      ubuntu release plan details
      Why the LTS become important
if you use ubuntu as server (the ubuntu server edition), you should mention whether the version is LTS or NOT because you must have trouble at the time cononical stop their support in operating system that you use.

      Suggestion
It would be nice when you dicide to upgrade or install the new version of ubuntu you noticed the Release Plan Details, unless you want doing some experiment. May install ubuntu will not take a long time but setting-up all application as before requires sufficient time.

Keroyokan - OpenSource Render Farm Engine for Blender

      12:19 PM

Keroyokan is OpenSource distributed rendering engine that works on Blender, the name of keroyokan is taken from javanese language that mean working together without any rasial issue. Keroyokan has release their first version with codename "kuniran" which tested and running well on both Linux and windows as node or master.

A render farm is a computer cluster built to render computer-generated imagery (CGI), typically for film and television visual effects, using off-line batch processing. This is different from a render wall, which is a networked, tiled display used for real-time rendering. The rendering of images is a highly parallelizable activity, as each frame usually can be calculated independently of the others, with the main communication between processors being the upload of the initial source material, such as models and textures, and the download of the finished images.

Interested in using it,  you can download the source here:
      Detail of Folder KEROYOKAN_KUNIRAN_001.zip
If you have download and unzip the source above, you will see some config file and folder, Here following description of file/folder you've downloaded the above :
      • Master: Folder Master contain is of all stuff about master
      • Node : Folder Node is contain of all stuff about node
      • Monitor : Folder Monitor is contain of all stuff about Monitor
      • RENDER_STORAGE : it's stuff must be on sharing folder transparent to Master, Node, and Monitor because You will place .blend file in here.

      Inside RENDER_STORAGE have 3 folder:
      • RENDER_ENGINE : Contains of your blender engine
      • SCRIPT_ENGINE : Contains  of specific python script to get rendering contex or another specific script passed when rendering process
      • TASK : Contains of your working stuff when render
Inside TASK folder have 3 folder:
      • SOURCE : place Your .blend file to this folder
      • PREPROCESS : this folder will use by system, don't mind it.
      • RESULT : your render result is here, run monitor program to see its complete or not. (will be explain on the next section)
Inside Master, Monitor and Node have config file called EngineConfig.txt it's the key to running keroyokan. The important thing is don't forget to point RENDER_PATH properties point to RENDER_STORAGE folder depend on Your Operating System:

      Example :
if you use Windows it's must be like this
      RENDER_PATH=G:\OTHER_STUFF\JAVA\SRC\SOURCE\KEROYOKAN_KUNIRAN_001\RENDER_STORAGE

if you use Linux it's must be like this
      RENDER_PATH=/home/blender/Documents/OTHER_STUFF/JAVA/KEROYOKAN_KUNIRAN_001/RENDER_STORAGE

For more information, visit Keroyokan official release page here, or ask directly to the author (Mr. Amru Rosyada) through this blog.
