Importing Evolution Emails and Contacts to Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird has replace an Evolution presence in Ubuntu (Since Ubuntu 11.04), there is nothing wrong with this replacement, this is only a policy of canonical to make a good movement for Ubuntu in the future (just like switching from Gnome Desktop to Unity).

Some people probably have feel comfortable using Thunderbird but some of them may have not, if you have plans to migrate from Evolution to Thunderbird without leaving any contacts and Emails that store in Evolution, you have found it. Here are solution to keep your Emails and contacts that stored in evolution being read by Thunderbird.

Importing Evolution Emails to Thunderbird
Both Thunderbird and Evolution use the same file format to store an email (it's called mbox), so there is possible way to make them collaborated. Here step to import Evolution emails to thunderbird.

• Open Nautilus.
• Go to folder: ~/.local/share/evolution/mail/local (this is Evolution folder that store users email).
• Copy all the file without extension (like as Inbox, Outbox,..) into the Thunderbird folder (in my computer it's store in ~/.thunderbird/43cge2q1.default/Mail/Local Folders, you need too change 43cge2q1.default into yours).
• Test it, Launch Thunderbird to check that all your mail have been correctly imported.

Besides of using a way above, you can also use Thunderbird Extension called MboxImport, MboxImport give an easy way to import and export emails using Mbox format.     

Importing Evolution Contacts to Thunderbird
To import Evolution contacts to thunderbird not so difficult like Importing Evolution Emails to Thunderbird above, here are step to import evolution contacts to thunderbird:

• Open your Evolution.
• Go to the contacts page, then to File > Save AS VCard for each contact. Other way, you can also select them all using Ctrl+A, then export the whole lot into one .vcf file.
• Open your Thunderbird, go to Tools > Import menu, in windows that appears select import an "Address Books" and select "vCard file ( *.vcf)" and browse *.vcf that have created above.

All done, your emails and contacts you should have been synchronized now.

Install / Upgrade to Wine 1.3.31 via PPA

Wine has come to version 1.3.31, although it's still development release, you can install it over PPA. Use following to Install / Upgrade to Wine 1.3.31 via PPA for Ubuntu Oneiric, Natty, Lucid, Karmic, and Jaunty.

Boost and Test Your Typing Speed With Typoo

Typoo is a small application written with Gambas that can be used for boosting and or testing your typing speed. It is a language-independent application because it uses external text files loaded into Typoo and you have to type the loaded file.

Installation:
Install Typoo on Ubuntu is a piece of cake, just type the following commands in Terminal:

• sudo add-apt-repository ppa:typoo-team/ppa
• sudo apt-get update
• sudo apt-get install typoo

Have an ugly interface? Here's the solution!
Typoo is made using Gambas so it needs some qt libraries to get a nice interface:

• sudo apt-get install qt3-qtconfig polymer

Once, "qt3-qtconfig" installed, run the following command and set your desired qt GUI style:

• qtconfig-qt3

Don't forget to save the changes by clicking "File - Save" on menubar. Now, your Typoo should looks like the first picture above.

Install Gloobus-Preview on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

Gloobus-Preview is an extension for the Gnome Desktop Environment designed to enable a full screen preview of any kind of file. It’s based on Apple’s “Quicklook”. GNOME 3.2 have its own quick file previewer called gnome-sushi. You can install it by typing "sudo apt-get install gnome-sushi". But if you want to use Gloobus Preview instead because it supports more file types, you can install it on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot easily.

Installation
Just type the following command to install Gloobus Preview on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot:

• sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gloobus-dev/gloobus-preview
• sudo apt-get update
• sudo apt-get install gloobus-preview gloobus-sushi libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev

Usage instruction
Simply select your file in Nautilus file browser and hit "Space" on keyboard to do a quick preview of the file.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Release Schedule

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS codename 'Precise Pangolin' scheduled release at April 2012, Ubuntu 12.04 will become latest Ubuntu Long Term Support since Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. LTS (Long Term Support) means Ubuntu version which usually have 3 years technical support from connonical, especially for Ubuntu server edition it will be 5 years support. Hopefully Ubuntu 12.04 will be better than 11.10 Oneiric in term of appearance, support and performance and also release as scheduled. According to ubuntu.com, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS will have 5 years support for desktop edition, i guess this will be a special product from ubuntu.

Ubuntu 11.10 in MacBook Pro

We Feel so pleased yesterday when some visitor say that "Ubuntu 11.10 Works out of the box in MacBook Pro 5.4/5.5/6.4/8.1"   

After that, we google it to find more information, here summary of Install Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot in MacBook Pro.

Unlike Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot recognize almost all hardware of MacBook Pro and some of them works out of the box without any setting such us : VGA Intel HD, Multitouch Trackpad, FacetimeHD Camera, Sound, CardReader, Monitor brightness and Keyboard Bakclight. When I was looking for any reference on the net some errors that we encountered among others Bluetooth and MacBook Pro Wireless. Here some required setting to install Ubuntu 11.10 in Macbook Pro

Instal Ubuntu 11.10 MacBook Pro
before it's start, you should read my previous article here, step by step to install Ubuntu 11.10 on MacBook Pro was actually same as there, some things you need to change is the ISO, change the ISO with Ubuntu 11.10 for MAC (64-bit), download through following address :

Fix Setting MacBook Wireless
Some of MacBook Pro Series having a trouble in wireless, there are two option regarding this problem. you can use third party application/driver emulator like ndiswrapper or do patching the kernel, but we suggest you to do the last option that is patching the kernel, because people having trouble like system suddently freeze, and over heating when use ndiwswrapper. Some MacBook Pro having problem with the Bluetooth (ex:MacBook Pro 6.0) but not all, If you experience this install btusb-dkms from MacTel PPA, do as following :

• sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mactel-support && sudo apt-get update
• sudo apt-get install btusb-dkms

Note: some people having trouble with Bluetooth in Ubuntu 11.10 (not only MacBook), as we mention today, there is update for Bluetooth tools and daemons, Bluetooth ALSA daemons, and Bluetooth printerdriver for CUPS. So  update immediately after finish installing Ubuntu 11.10.

Fix Setting Mouse and Touchpad
Your MultiTouch and trackpad is works, right ? to get more setting of them go to System Settings > Mouse and Touchpad. See the image bellow.

Some additional application which help you to configure multitouch is Touchégg, Touchégg is a multitouch gesture recognizer for GNU/Linux that allows associating actions to each gesture.

Gwibber 3.4 Features Plan

Gwibber 3.4 plans to integrate with Google+ in ones of their services, this notes taken from Ken VanDine blog (creator of Gwibber).

Gwibber 3.4 will available in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin but we strongly hope that we can taste it in Ubuntu 11.10, with the new Gwibber client, there aren’t really many new “features” however it is important to note not all previous features made it in (Ken van dine says). Some working on progress that we can see in Gwibber 3.4 launchpad are :

• Add Google+ Service to Gwibber, Gwibber "Smooth scrolling",
• CPU usage shoots up when opening new tweet box, 
• Ability to post images & attachments to identi.ca & status.net, and
• Facebook send messages, user profiles, comments, and likes.

The most notable missing feature is the multi-column view, we still wait for its mock-up, but it would be very promising when Gwibber 3.4 interface will look like "tweetdeck", here some of Gwibber 3.4 Features plan taken from ken's blog.

Gnome Tweak Tools now available on default Ubuntu 11.10 repository, install Gnome Tweak Tools using following command.

Fix VirtualBox Error "Failed to access the USB subsystem" on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

When you run VirtualBox at the first time on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, you may get this following error message: "Failed to access the USB subsystem. VirtualBox is not currently allowed to access USB devices. You can change this by adding your user to the 'vboxusers' group. Please see the user manual for more detailed explanation."

As describe in the error message, we must add the user to 'vboxusers' group to fix this problem. Unfortunately, there is no GUI tool to manage users and groups on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot (yet). So, we must do it manually by using command line.

Assume that we have user "hok00age" and we'll add him to member of "vboxusers" group. Simply type the following command:

• sudo usermod -a -G vboxusers hok00age

Make sure you have done it correctly by checking "/etc/group" file:

• cat /etc/group

Restart your computer and once computer restarted, run VirtualBox and check if the problem is fixed.

Boost Apt-Get Download Speed Using Apt-Fast and Apt-Proz, Install Them on Ubuntu via PPA

Recently, I have wrote about how to limit apt-get download speed. Today, I'd like to show you cross-purposed applications called apt-fast and apt-proz. Both of them can boost your apt-get download speed by using such an engine, apt-fast use Axel engine and apt-proz use ProZilla engine. They can do parallel download, so as expected, your download speed is faster than usig reguler apt-get operation.

Apt-Fast

Install it on Ubuntu (Lucid, Maverick, Natty, Oneiric):

• sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tldm217/tahutek.net
• sudo apt-get update
• sudo apt-get install apt-fast

Usage instruction:

• sudo apt-fast install packge_name

or

• sudo apt-fast upgrade

Apt-Proz

Install it on Ubuntu (Lucid, Maverick, Natty, and Oneiric):

• sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tldm217/tahutek.net
• sudo apt-get update

Install ProZilla Download Accelerator on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot via PPA

ProZilla is ncurses based download accelerator that supports parallel downloads, HTTP and FTP downloads with FTP search feature. FTP search means ProZilla can search fastest FTP mirror for faster download speed. Because it based on ncurses, ProZilla is lightweight download accelerator too.

Installation:
Ubuntu Lucid, Maverick, Natty and Oneiric can install ProZilla download accelerator by simply typing the following command:

Install VirtualBox 4.1 on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

VirtualBox is a virtualization application that can help you run any x86 and AMD64/Intel64 compatible operating system on host machine. VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh, and Solaris hosts and supports a lot of guest operating systems such as (not limited to) Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, OS/2, and OpenBSD. VirtualBox 4.1.4 is now available for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

Adding VirtualBox repository:

• sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian oneiric contrib"
• wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
• sudo apt-get update

Installing VirtualBox 4.1:

• sudo apt-get install virtualbox-4.1

If you want USB 2.0, VirtualBox RDP and PXE boot for Intel cards support on your guest machines, you have to install extension pack that can be downloaded here.

Once extension pack downloaded, open VirtualBox and navigate to "File -> Preferences", at the "Extensions" section, click icon "Add package" and locate your downloaded extension pack.

Ubuntu 11.10 Review and Features (Screenshot)

Finally Ubuntu 11.10 Codenamed 'Oneiric Ocelot' has been officially released, the worlds most popular Linux operating system 'Ubuntu' has been released by canonical on 13 October 2011.

As writen in  Ubuntu 11.10 preliminary notes, Ubuntu come with full Unity experience and LightDM as default Login screen in Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and some of  `unity based` Ubuntu Fork. Since its last release on April 28th 2011, today we will what changes have been made.


The Desktop
Ubuntu 11.10 Final come with Unity which well collaborated with Compiz. Some of features in this release may ever seen in Ubuntu 11.10 alpha and beta, here's summary of notable changes of Ubuntu 11.10 since Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhall :

• Ubuntu 11.10 use Linux Kernel 3.0.0-12-generic 
• Unity Desktop run on Gnome 3.2 (Fresh from the oven!!) .
• LightDM is default login screen.
• Ubuntu menu in the top left screen is Gone, replace with unity menu lens. 
• Gnome Classic (Ubuntu Classic theme) totally remove, just leaving the choice Unity and Unity 2D.
• A new appearance of Alt+Tab switcher (this features has been use since Oneiric beta) completed with window preview. Even though it's looks more 'simple' and 'old' compared with compiz cover flow, Unity Alt+Tab switcher not forget the functionality.
• Unity dash completed with left side menu 'lens' which filter the application based on category and ratings, this lets you find installed applications easily.
• Some application have a new Icon. and looks bigger than before. 
• The Dash has a new music lens, linked to Banshee and Ubuntu One Music Store, that searches your personal and online music collections.
• Better performance of launchers and panel, ported to GTK 3 and GTK 3-based indicator stack. 
• Gwibber brings improved performance and appearance.
• Ubuntu Mono and Ubuntu Condensed become new member of Ubuntu Font Family.

Ubuntu 11.10 application/software manager now is Ubuntu Software Center 5.0 because synaptics totally remove from default application (but you can install it by manual then), in Ubuntu 11.04 we counter 33.962 application provided in software center, Now we have 36.112 application provided, this mean we have 2150 new application which not available before.

Ubuntu Software Center 5.0 looks more fresh and more usable, its completed with user review, rating, Application list views can also sorted by top-rated, by name, and also by the date the application appeared in the Center.

Like previous write in here, Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric will come with 15 new wallpapers (1 new official wallpapers + 14 selected Community Wallpapers) which actually new and never include on ubuntu 11.04 (above).

Actually, Ubuntu 11.10 just leave 4 themes (GTK) to choose, that is Ambiance, Radiance, High Contras, and High Contras Inverse. We can't  change anymore the appearances of window by manual (window color, window border, etc) and we also lost toolbar menu in the Nautilus.


Notable Missing Application 
After finish installing Ubuntu 11.10 to our system, we hope that we will find a new experience without losing some great feature that available in previous version. Well, some application has much improvement, but some application has lost. here some lost application/features that we missed the presence.

• We miss the toolbar menu in Nautilus. although this looks better but this  progress has limit our capabilities.
• Synaptics, Ubuntu Software Center 5 can replace all functionality of synaptics, but for some reason 'on the same' computer Ubuntu Software Center runs so slowly compared with synapics.
• I can't take fast Screenshot using compiz, compiz have utility to make fast screenshot by pressing the <super> + <button 1> , now i can't do it and back to the classic way :(
• We have lost theme 'appearence' utility which let's us setting such window color, icon, default font, and window border. we're only left 4 theme to choose.
• Gnome Classic, we also lost theUbuntu Classic as alternative desktop environment in login page, as we can see on login screen we have only a choice to Unity and Unity 2D.
