Cinnamon: Bring GNOME2-Like Layout on GNOME Shell

10:34 PM

Cinnamon is a fork of GNOME Shell developed by Linux Mint Team that brings innovative features of GNOME Shell and simple layout of GNOME 2. Before we jump into the rest of article, please take a look at the figure below.

As you can see, Cinnamon comes with single panel contains "menu" button on the left, followed by "quick launch" icons and window list. Indicator applet and another notification icon is positioned on the right of panel. Pretty simple, huh? Application launcher is simplified too, with single large box containing installed applications shortcut, favorite applications, and session control to logout, etc.

Installing on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot
Although Cinnamon is developed and intended for Linux Mint, it can be installed on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. First thing first, install GNOME Shell by typing the following command:
  • sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
Once installed correctly, please download the Cinnamon installer here. Download both "cinnamon" and "cinnamon-session" packages and install them:
  • sudo dpkg -i cinnamon_1.1.2_i386.deb
  • sudo dpkg -i cinnamon-session_1.0.0_all.deb
Now, you may logout and select "Cinnamon" on session choices when login.
Cinnamon is in early development, so use with your own risk!

Good luck!

Install and Configure Slingshot Launcher on Xubuntu (XFCE)

8:06 AM

Hello readers! I have written two articles about XFCE on how to configure dual monitor and enable Dropbox "Copy Public Link" on Thunar File Manager. Today I'd like to show you how to install and configure Slingshot Launcher on Xubuntu (XFCE). For your information, Slingshot Launcher is an application launcher created by Elementary OS team that provides full screen and eye catching launcher. Please take a closer look at the below picture.

As an application developed by Elementary OS team, Slingshot Launcher is definitely fast and lightweight. I have tried to install it on my Xubuntu and bingo! Everything goes well.

Install Slingshot Launcher on Xubuntu (XFCE)
Please download the *.deb file of Slingshot Launcher here. Once downloaded, type the following command:
  • sudo dpkg -i slingshot-launcher_0.0.1~pre-0~48~natty1_i386.deb
  • sudo apt-get -f install
OK! Please try your newly installed Slingshot Launcher by running command "slingshot" on the Terminal.

Configuring Slingshot Launcher
The purpose of this section is to create a shortcut for Slingshot Launcher on XFCE panel. Now, right click on the panel and select "Panel > Add new items ...". On the "Add New Items" windows, add "Launcher" to the panel.

New icon has been added to the panel, now right click on the icon, select "Properties". On "Launcher" properties window click on icon indicates "Add a new empty item" and fill in the from so it looks like the below picture.

Of course, you can choose a custom icon for the launcher. Now when you click on the custom launcher, it should execute Slingshot Launcher and display full screen menu on the screen.

Regards.

KDE 4.8 Preview (Sneak Peak)

10:16 AM

Yesterday, KDE has release the first Release Candidate (KDE 4.8 RC 1) for its renewed Workspaces, Applications, and Development Platform. KDE 4.8 which is scheduled to be release in January 2012 you can peek the appearance here.

Taken from the announcement here, KDE 4.8 RC 1 is contain a hundred of bugs fix since its Beta. One of new features in KDE 4.8 is a 'Secret Service', KSecretService is an application which provide shared password storage that help a user to save their password (optionally) and share it with other application, I have not tried this application but (guess) seems similar to Ubuntu password keyring.

Some notable feature in KDE 4.8 are :

  • Qt Quick in Plasma Workspaces -- Qt Quick is making its way into the Plasma Workspaces, the new Plasma Components provide a standardized API implementation of widgets with native Plasma Look and Feel. The device notifier widget has been ported to using these components and is now written in pure QML. KWin's window switcher is now also QML-based, paving the way for newly designed window switchers.
  • Use Dolphin2, file view has been rewritten for better performance, scalability and more attractive visual appearance.
  • KSecretService optionally enables a shared password storage, therefore making your saved passwords available to many other applications, leading to a more secure system and better integration of non-KDE apps into the Plasma Workspaces and KDE apps into non-Plasma workspaces.
  • More ..

Get Dropbox "Copy Public Link" Works on Thunar File Manager [XFCE]

5:44 PM

In my previous post, I shared my experience using XFCE on how to setup dual-monitor. Today, I'd like to share another XFCE trick on how to enable Dropbox "Copy Public Link" on Thunar File Manager. If you have never heard before, Dropbox is online storage service that offers 2GB disk space for free account, while Thunar is default file manager for XFCE desktop, it's like Nautilus in Gnome desktop. Okay, before we jump into the trick, please let me show you what will we do in this post.

Installing requirement
You have to install an application called "xclip" that can be installed by typing the following command:
  • sudo apt-get install xclip

Downloading script
Download the script called "dropbox.py" here and place in "/usr/bin". Once downloaded and placed well, please type the following command to make it executable:
  • sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/dropbox.py

Setting Up Thunar File Manager
Now, you have to add custom action in Thunar File Manager which will get the public url using dropbox.py and then copy it to the clipboard using xclip:
  1. In the Thunar menu, go to Edit/Configure Custom Actions...
  2. Press the uppermost button in the left (the + button).
  3. In the dialog which appears, fill the following entries:
  4. Name: Copy Dropbox public URL Command: bash -c "dropbox.py puburl %n | xclip -i -selection clipboard"
  5. In the Appearance Conditions conditions page, mark every checkbox but the Directories one.
  6. Accept, and then close

Now, you can copy Dropbox Public URL from Thunar's context menu as shown in the first picture above.

How to: Dual Monitor Setup on XFCE (Xubuntu)

2:20 PM

Dear readers! Recently, I have switched to XFCE (Xubuntu) because my Unity interface runs very slow on my computer, especially when running Netbeans IDE to do my college assignment. XFCE is a lightweight desktop environment for Linux, compared to Unity, XFCE is more and more faster! So today, I'd like to share my experience using XFCE to you. OK, let's start with dual monitor setup on XFCE (Xubuntu).

I have two monitors: main display on my notebook has 1280x800 pixels resolution, and my second display (LCD monitor) has 1366x768 pixels resolution. We are going to place the second monitor at the right of the main display (as seen at the picature above). OK! Let's do this.

Open the "Settings Editor" by clicking the application menu > Settings > Settings Editor (see the image below).

In the Settings Editor window, select "display > Default > VGA1 (may be differ from yours) > Position" and double click do the "X" item. Please fill in the form to match your screen resolution. In this case, the width of my main display (laptop monitor) is 1280, so I fill "1280" in the value field. Please "Save" and check if everything is done well.

Now, please log out, plug your second monitor to the PC or Laptop, and do login action. If you did it well, you should have second display on the right of your main display.

Enjoy :)

Fix dpkg error "dpkg: error processing (--unpack) trying to overwrite…"

7:44 AM

I have a feedback on my article about installing ProZilla Download Accelerator, he said that he encountered this problem:

Sedang membuka paket prozilla (dari .../prozilla_2.0.4-build2~tahutek~oneiric_amd64.deb) ...
dpkg: ada kesalahan saat memproses /var/cache/apt/archives/prozilla_2.0.4-build2~tahutek~oneiric_amd64.deb (--unpack): mencoba menimpa '/usr/share/locale/locale.alias', yang juga ada dalam paket locales 2.13+git20110622-2

The above error is in Indonesian, the English version about the error is shown on the picture below:

Please take a closer look at the red-marked area! Today we are going to fix this problem. OK, let's get started!

Simply, type the following command:
  • cd /var/cache/apt/archives/
  • sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite 'file_name'
  • sudo apt-get -f install

Replace "file_name" with the suitable one. In this case, the troublesome file is "prozilla_2.0.4-build2~tahutek~oneiric_amd64.deb". So, you must replace "file_name" with "prozilla_2.0.4-build2~tahutek~oneiric_amd64.deb".
  • cd /var/cache/apt/archives/
  • sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite prozilla_2.0.4-build2~tahutek~oneiric_amd64.deb
  • sudo apt-get -f install

You can use this trick to another file that cause such an error.

Regards :)

SOFA: SPSS Alternative for Linux

7:45 AM

If you have ever used SPSS statistics application before, you might know what SOFA is. SOFA stands for Statistics Open For All can be used to be an alternative to paid statistics software SPSS.

SOFA is a user-friendly statistics, analysis, & reporting program. It is free, with an emphasis on ease of use, learn as you go, and beautiful output.
SOFA lets you display results in an attractive format ready to share. And SOFA will help you learn as you go.

The key features of SOFA such as:
Ongoing Development
SOFA Statistics is a new project and features are being added on an ongoing basis. Priority areas are being completed first

Beauty - Attractive Output
Beautiful output is a feature, even in a statistics/analysis program! It means that SOFA output can be used for presentations or automated reporting without manual formatting or reworking. Many statistical programs do not place much emphasis on aesthetics.

Database Friendly
Many statistics programs make you import data from a database before you can use it. Not SOFA. You can connect directly to your database, and all its tables. Just give SOFA the login details. You can even edit data from within SOFA, or apply a simple data filter to focus on the subset of a table you are interested in. SOFA currently supports:
  • MySQL
  • Microsoft Access
  • SQLite
  • PostgreSQL
  • Microsoft SQL Server

The third feature I've mentioned above is the special feature that other statistics software don't have. You can do such a direct connect to DMBS (Database Management System) without having to import the database itself.

For further information about SOFA, please take a closer look to its website.

Install SOFA on Ubuntu
Simply download the .deb file here, and type the following command once downloaded:
  • sudo dpkg -i sofastats-1.1.2-1_all.deb
  • sudo apt-get -f install
SOFA is available for Windows and Mac too, you can download the installer here.

Natural scrolling is when you scroll with a trackpad, you move your finger down if you want to scroll down. It’s as if you’re moving the scrollbar, not the page itself. [makeuseof.com]

Natural scrolling is a features that change the habit in using touchpad, this technologies is inspired by man's natural habit that is moving the hand downward to make the page down or moving the hand upward to make the page up (like reading newspapers).

If you're Mac-Ubuntu user or using laptop that support multitouch trackpad, there's a good news for you because you can install 'apple natural scrolling' or just test it in ubuntu, check this out

Once installed, please proceed to "Tweaks > Theme", under "Cursor Theme" option select your desired mouse cursor theme. The next step is activating the change to system-wide environment, you can do that by typing:

GNOME Shell Extensions Website Has Been Launched

6:03 AM

For those who are using GNOME Shell must be excited with this news. GNOME shell extension website has been launched yesterday as public alpha stage. You must use Firefox with an extension - which is installed by default on GNOME 3.2 - to get an easy one-click install from the website. There is also an "on-off" button shown if you are running GNOME Shell when visiting the website.

As an alpha stage, there are some bugs and problems:

  • There are some bugs that currently cause the browser plugin to not work correctly in WebKit-based browsers like Epiphany or Chrome. We will fix these bugs in subsequent releases of GNOME Shell, but for now using Firefox to access extensions.gnome.org is advised.
  • Extensions that use GSettings to store user settings cannot be currently installed as a user; this limitation will be fixed for GNOME 3.4. In the mean time, extension authors should avoid the use of GSettings if they want to make their extension available via extensions.gnome.org.
  • Due to a bug in GNOME Shell 3.2.1 code, the uninstall button will not work for some extensions. Disabling extensions still works, but if you want to remove an extension entirely, you'll need to manually delete it from ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions.

For now, there are a few extensions available for download such as Alternative Status Menu, Frippery Application Menu, Dock, Exaile DoubanFM Control, etc. So, please take a closer look to GNOME Shell Website and grab what you like :)

ProzGUI: GUI Version of ProZilla

4:29 PM

Recently, I wrote an article about ProZilla Download Accelerator that runs under command line interface. If you don't like that "geeky" stuff and want an application that has Graphical User Interface with similar function, you might want to try ProzGUI.

ProzGUI uses "Tk" library, so it is definitely fast and lightweight. ProzGUI has its own configuration file, so you can install both ProZilla and ProzGUI without any conflict.

You can install ProzGUI by typing the following command:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alza/project
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install prozgui

Enjoy :)
