Real-time Linux: Installation on Ubuntu

3:55 AM

A real-time operating system (RTOS) is an operating system (OS) intended to serve real-time application requests.

A key characteristic of an RTOS is the level of its consistency concerning the amount of time it takes to accept and complete an application's task; the variability is jitter.

An RTOS has an advanced algorithm for scheduling. Scheduler flexibility enables a wider, computer-system orchestration of process priorities, but a real-time OS is more frequently dedicated to a narrow set of applications. Key factors in a real-time OS are minimal interrupt latency and minimal thread switching latency; a real-time OS is valued more for how quickly or how predictably it can respond than for the amount of work it can perform in a given period of time.

An RTOS is used in many Industrial applications such as

Military: For gathering data from a wide variety of real time sensors (satellite, air, surface, subsurface) and delivering it to analysis capabilities and weapon systems

Telecommunications: Real Time access to information from vast array of devices including computers, set top boxes,PDAs,Pagers and wireless phones.

Aviation: Improved real time capabilities will increase safety and efficiency by identifying dangerous situations and enabling flexible routing to relieve congestion and prevent collisions.

Automotive: Commuters will receive real time data , GPS location information and operational data via ground stations and satellites , thus routing the driver around accidents , roadwork or traffic congestion in real time.

Scientific: For monitoring and instrument control.eg.seismic information is increasingly distributed on a vast scale ,enabling scientist to verify even small scale nuclear detonations as well as helping smaller remote countries prepare for weather and seismic disasters.

The linux-realtime package available for latest Ubuntu versions can bring real-time capabilities to Ubuntu Linux. The remainder of this article will covers in detail installation of linux-realtime package for Ubuntu so that it can be used for real-time application development efforts.

Installing Linux-Realtime in Ubuntu

Linux-Realtime can be installed on both 12.04 and older versions of the Ubuntu distribution. For Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) you can directly add the PPA from the following command.
  • $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:abogani/realtime
For Ubuntu 11.10 or older you need to edit the sources.list file to add the repositories manually.
  • $ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Then append the following lines at the end of the file
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/abogani/realtime/ubuntu precise main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/abogani/realtime/ubuntu precise main
Save the file and update the apt repositories
  • $ sudo apt-get update
You are now ready to install the Linux-Realtime on your Ubuntu system
  • $ sudo apt-get install linux-realtime
(Last two steps are also valid for PPA method in Ubuntu 12.04)

This will update the Linux kernel to the version 3.2 with realtime version. With the Previous version of your linux kernel intact which you can choose from the grub boot menu at the boot time.

Note: Booting into Real-time Linux is not recommended for day to day work on Ubuntu as the performance with Real-time Linux is slightly slow and sluggish with normal desktop environments (such as gnome, unity etc) and apps than with the normal kernel OS.

9:50 AM

Canonical has held an user survey which aim to build a picture of how people really discover Ubuntu, have you taken the survey ?.

Ubuntu user survey 2012 has finally closed and the result has already published through canonical blog, the result is divide into 3 part, here the compilation of part 1, part 2, and part 3 (click the image to get larger) :

Where Most of Ubuntu Users Are ?
This result is simply representative where most Ubuntu users live, the result show 21% Ubuntu user live in the US.

Is Ubuntu Easy to Install ?
Ubuntu is very easy to install ?, yes of course, at least that's the survey results.

How did they hear about Ubuntu ?
So do people who have come to the platform more recently discover it in different ways to to the those who have been on the platform longer?  see the result :

Source< 2 years2-4 years5 years or more
Magazines, etc6.9%7.9%9.4%
Work3.9%4.8%4.9%
Friends/Family27.2%25.2%20.5%

Which Ubuntu product get most attention?
Of some products that have been/will be released by ubuntu (canonical) Ubuntu for android get the most attention to the user.
Willingness to purchase Ubuntu on a new device
Without specifying the device therefore including PCs, netbooks etc we see the willingness to buy,  by age in ascending of willingness.
Which OS that user Install except Ubuntu ?
this survey aim to get a picture of other operating systems that ubuntu user use. Some OSes are specific to certain types of devices so we see a picture of Ubuntu users preferred mobile devices also. From the result we known that Windows still dominate.
Conclusion
Here the conclution of the survey that pronounced by canonical :

So the survey is telling us  that there is a strong propensity in the user base to buy an Ubuntu machine and perhaps not a single machine but multiple devices featuring Ubuntu. This propensity only seems to get stronger in Latin America and Iberia. Given the heterogeneity of OS usage it is also important to make sure that we continue to develop a platform that plays nice with others which seems to be correctly prioritised on the product roadmaps.

I should say that it is taking me slight longer to extract these data sets and write the blog posts than I expect so we will have to push the remaining one until tomorrow. Thank you also for the comments so and I will continue to respond to them as I can. Final installment tomorrow
.

Go Ubuntu, more and more :)

Solution for APT Error: "E: The package NAMA needs to be reinstalled, but I can’t find an archive for it"

7:47 PM

Few days ago, I re-installed VLC which was removed accidentally. Suddenly, my laptop turned off because of my battery, so VLC was not installed correctly and caused a problem when running APT command with error message: "E: The package vlc needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.".

I have never encountered this error message before. Well, I copied the error message to Google search and fortunately, Google gave me everything including the solution for this error message.

And here is the solution:
  • sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq NAME
Well, I didn't forget to change NAME with the problematic package in this case, vlc. So, the command should look like this:
  • sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq vlc
Once, VLC completely removed, type this command to install VLC again:
  • sudo apt-get install vlc
If everything does well, APT can now be used as usual.

Good luck!

Steve Jobs tried to woo Linus Trovalds to work for Apple and sack Linux

8:25 PM

Torvalds has never met Bill Gates, but around 2000, when he was still working at Transmeta, he met Steve Jobs. Jobs invited him to Apple’s Cupertino campus and tried to hire him. “Unix for the biggest user base: that was the pitch,” says Torvalds. The condition: He’d have to drop Linux development.

“He wanted me to work at Apple doing non-Linux things,” he said. That was a non-starter for Torvalds. Besides, he hated Mac OS’s Mach kernel.

I said no,”  Torvalds remembers.

Linux is now the core of  Operating Systems such as Android, Chrome WebOS and a few others. Had A Jobs succeeded hiring Torvalds in 2000, Linux might not have made it to 2012.

Here is a Video of Linus Trovalds talking about Apple and Steve jobs

Some choose a license by the popularity. Some because a particular license is used in their favorite projects. Even worse, some even choose a license because it looks or sounds cool.

There are many resources on the Web that provide comparison of the available licenses. But here is one quick and funny way to make a choice of open source license for your projects.

How to Remote Ubuntu From Windows via VNC

8:03 PM

Not only Ubuntu, sometimes we needed to work with other OS like windows in office or somewhere else. When we're not face directly with our computer (Ubuntu), can we monitor it ?, yes, you can !, you can do it via remote desktop connection.

Ubuntu as a part of Linux has provide some ports which commonly used as remote protocol, that is ssh (port 22) and telnet (port 21). If you are accustomed to use terminal you can use both of port above, but if you are not accustomed to, you can do it via VNC.

What is VNC ?
Virtual Network Computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop sharing system that uses the RFB protocol to remotely control another computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying the graphical screen updates back in the other direction, over a network. VNC is platform-independent – a VNC viewer on one operating system may connect to a VNC server on the same or any other operating system, (Wikipedia).

This article will show us how to remote Ubuntu desktop from windows via VNC For the first step, make sure that gsettings is already installed, in my computer (Ubuntu 11.10) gsetting has already installed by default, but if not do as follow to install gsetting in Ubuntu :

  • sudo apt-get install libglib2.0-bin
Second, Open terminal and execute following commands in order to allow other computers to access your computer.
  • gsettings set org.gnome.Vino enabled true
third, Download and install VNC Viewer on Windows then run it. Put the address of your computer in server field then click OK, wait until the remote computer (Ubuntu) authenticate the connection.
VNC Viewer (Windows) make a connection to Ubuntu
Remote computer (Ubuntu) is asking permission, to get connected, you can click "refuse" to deny the connection.
Remote computer (ubuntu) is asking a Permission
if connect successfully, VNC (Windows) will display remote computer desktop, see screenshot.
The display of Ubuntu desktop From Windows
If you want guest/any computer could connect to your desktop (Ubuntu) without asking any permission (automatically connect without login prompt), do following in terminal :
  • settings set org.gnome.Vino prompt-enabled false
this is end of article How to remote ubuntu desktop from windows trough VNC, hopefully help you ..

Linux kernel 3.3 released with Android support

6:52 PM

The latest release of the Linux kernel 3.3, is now available, this is the second release of the kernel in 2012 which brings with it the long-awaited merging of code from Google's Android project.

This is what particularly interesting to developers looking to boot Android or run apps on the stock Linux kernel and represents a resolution to the issues that kept the two apart for so long it's not the only new feature included. However optimized power management and other infrastructure that didn't make it this time will arrive in the next release that is 3.4

For a long time, code from the Android project has not been merged back to the Linux repositories due to disagreement between developers from both projects” the Linux 3.3 release notes state.
“Fortunately, after several years the differences are being ironed out. Various Android subsystems and features have already been merged, and more will follow in the future. This will make things easier for everybody, including the Android mod community, or Linux distros that want to support Android programs.”
Also made into the release are improvements to file systems like Btrfs, memory management, networking, security and much, much more.

Emulate CD/DVD Images with CDEmu

4:12 PM

I have written a post about Mounty, a simple application which allows us to mount CD/DVD images in Linux. Today, I'd like to write a post about CDEmu. What is CDEmu? Please read this quoted sentence:

CDemu is a software suite designed to emulate an optical drive and disc (including CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs) on the Linux operating system.
CDEmu consists of:
  • a kernel module implementing a virtual drive-controller
  • libmirage which is a software library for interpreting optical disc images
  • a daemon which emulates the functionality of an optical drive+disc
  • textmode and GTK clients for controlling the emulator

Installation
Ubuntu users and its derivatives can install CDEmu by typing the following command:
  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cdemu/ppa
  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get install cdemu-daemon cdemu-client
Once installed, please restart your computer to get CDEmu daemon running or simply run "cdemud" command if you don't want to do so.

Mounting image
In this post, I'll give an example on how to mount image using CDEmu especially with text mode client. Run the following command to mount image with CDEmu:
  • cdemu load 0 myfile.cue
The above command will mount "myfile.cue" into "0" virtual device.

Unmounting image
If you want to unmount recently mounted image (on device "0"), simply type the following command
  • cdemu unload 0
For more commands available, please refer to CDEmu man page by typing "man cdemu" on Terminal.

Regards :)

Axel: Command Line Download accelerator

2:16 AM

You must have read or heard about wget command line download utility. It provides  immense capabilities, but when it comes to accelerating the download speed, wget doesn't provide any option. But Axel is one such tool which do the job of a download accelerator very well.
Axel does the same thing any other accelerator does: it opens more than one HTTP/FTP connection per download and each connection transfers its own, separate, part of the file.

Downloading Axel

For Ubuntu Axel is available in the default apt repositories, open the terminal and issue the following command.
  • $ sudo apt-get install axel

Using Axel

Download from multiple locations
  • $ axel <url1> <url2> <url3>
This will use all these mirrors to download the file.

Limit the download speed
  • $ axel -s 3000000 <url>
Mention the speed in bytes per second.

Limit the number of concurrent connections or threads
  • $ axel -n 3 <url>
Change the name of the output file
  • $ axel -o output_file.ext <url>
Mentioning a directory will save the file in that directory.

View the download information of each connection or thread
  • $ axel -a n 3 <url>

Thanks for reading :-)

Anonymous OS: Ubuntu based "malicious" OS pulled down amid panic

8:51 PM

Earlier this week, someone created a Tumblr webpage for a new operating system called “Anonymous-OS Live.”. However Soon after the operating system became available, the @AnonOps a Twitter account that is believed to speak for Anonymous posted a message saying it was fake and "wrapped in trojans" but despite the warnings, more than 26,000 people still downloaded it.

The creators of the OS denied it was infected with viruses arguing,

In our world, in Linux and opensource world, there are no viruses.

And If any user  believe that Anonymous-OSis wrapped in trojans” or “backdoored OS by any Law enforcement Company or Hacker” please don’t download it!

But don’t mislead the world that Linux is dangerous and has trojans!

You could download it as a torrent and via direct download, but as of today, only the former option. SourceForge pulled it down.

The 1.36 GB download is based on Ubuntu - one of the most popular versions of the Linux operating system. With Mate Desktop Environment and is pre-loaded with lots of website sniffing and security tools. The software's creators say they put it together for "education purposes to checking the security of web pages".  They also warn not to use any of the tools “to destroy any web page” because doing say may make mean you “end up in jail because is a crime in most countries!”

Here are few of the Screenshots of Anonymous OS  as posted on the tumbler page.

Downloading Anonymous OS

The Official Direct Download link from Sourceforge is however taken down earlier this morning but the Anonymous OS is available for download from torrents available here. Adventurous users can download and make a bootable CD/USB image of the Live iso using unetbootin tool. However it is not recommended to download and use it, keeping the warnings from top security companies in mind.
