Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot Development Update

9:11 AM

(this article is re-post from previous article that writen by dholbach in  this article)

Last week we hit Feature Freeze. This is the big date that all developer dread the most. Now features and new upstream versions have to have landed, everything else will be a matter the release team has to decide upon. We are rushing towards release with UI Freeze and Beta Freeze coming up next week. Exciting times!
For this report I got an update from the Ubuntu Server team, written by Dave Walker.

What’s cooking in Ubuntu server land?
The Ubuntu Server Team has already had quite a busy cycle. Last cycle, openstack components were initially introduced. This cycle has seen them receive much more attention, and packaging of extra components that didn’t exist last cycle.
In addition, using Ubuntu Server to orchestrate deployments is something that has evolved this cycle. One of the most interesting parts is the use of cobbler for deployment.
Ensemble, which is now part of the server team has entered the archive this cycle. Originally, ensemble worked purely against the ec2 API to assist with cloud deployments. This cycle, support for provisioning bare-metal hardware using cobblers API has been achieved.
There are always areas where interested people can contribute to the server flavour. The development tasks that people can take on varies from bitesize trivial tasks, to larger undertaking depending on available time commitment and experience. The type of desired task also tends to vary depending on the stage of the development cycle.
The Ubuntu server team tracks these bugs for release. Please note, that anything unassigned or assigned to ‘Ubuntu Server Team’ is generally up for grabs.
Another crucial part of being part of the Ubuntu Server Team, is triaging incoming bugs. We generally follow this process. We also welcome testing of the development cd image, and server archive components. This is vital to help catch critical issues before release.
Ensemble is always interested in having formula contributions, which is another interesting way that people with experience in deploying workloads are welcomed to contribute.
All contributions to Ubuntu Server are appreciated, if you want to get more involved please join#ubuntu-server on freenode IRC and say hello, or more formally follow:https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/Membership
Thanks a lot Dave for the update! I’d like to add that if you’re interested in the Cloud and what’s happening there, make sure you visit http://cloud.ubuntu.com/! Also if you got excited about Ensemble and what it can do for you, have a look at existing formulas and requested formulas. Just join #ubuntu-ensemble if you need some help or want to meet the people behind this fantastic project.
If you’re interested in any other aspect of Ubuntu Oneiric, I’d refer you to the oneiric-changes mailing list and the big picture specification status overview instead. So what’s happening with the Ubuntu Desktop?

Events
We have one of the coolest events of the whole cycle coming up: Ubuntu Global Jam. Local Community teams around the world come together to have a good time on work on Ubuntu directly: translations, bugs, packaging, documentation, testing, documentation – everything goes! Check out the list of participating events to find out where to go, or set up an event yourself! There’s still some time until 2nd-4th September!
If you want to get involved in packaging and bug fixing, there’s still a lot of bugs that need to get fixed:
  • There’s packages that fail to build.
  • Also is the Ubuntu Mozilla team looking for help, so if you’re excited about Mozilla and what’s happening there, join IRC, talk to the guys on #ubuntu-mozillateam on irc.freenode.net.
  • And then there’s Security bugs you can take a look at, the team is a friendly bunch and they’re incredibly helpful in getting your patch reviewed.
  • Also is the Server team interested in your help: merges from Debian is one possibility, fixing important bugs another.

New Contributors
I was on holidays for a two weeks, so here’s almost three weeks worth of new contributors! Here’s the list of new Ubuntu heroes: Ben HowardTim NiemuellerStefan TaunerGary Poster,Guybrush88. Five new people in the Ubuntu world, welcome everyone!

Get Involved
  1. Read the Introduction to Ubuntu Development. It’s a short article which will help you understand how Ubuntu is put together, how the infrastructure is used and how we interact with other projects.
  2. Follow the instructions in the Getting Set Up article. A few simple commands, a registration at Launchpad and you should have all the tools you need, and you’re ready to go.
  3. Check out our instructions for how to fix a bug in Ubuntu, they come with small examples that make it easier to visualise what exactly you need to do.
Find something to work on
Pick a bitesize bug. These are the bugs we think should be easy to fix. Another option is to help out in one of our initiatives.
In addition to that there are loads more opportunities over at Harvest.

Getting in touch
There are many different ways to contact Ubuntu developers and get your questions answered.
  • Be interactive and reach us most immediately: talk to us in #ubuntu-motu on irc.freenode.net.
  • Follow mailing lists and get involved in the discussions: ubuntu-devel-announce (announce only, low traffic), ubuntu-devel (high-level discussions), ubuntu-devel-discuss (fairly general developer discussions).
  • Stay up to date and follow the ubuntudev account on FacebookIdenti.ca or Twitter.

Thunderbird will Shipped Default in Ubuntu 11.10

9:20 AM

Finally there is any certainty that mozilla thunderbird will become Ubuntu 11.10 Oneric Ocelot default mail application replacing Evolution, this news also written by Mike Conley (Mozilla Thunderbird Staf) on his blog here.

Thunderbird will be the default e-mail client in Ubuntu Oneiric
..
Well, kinda, yeah.  But the thing is, those first alphas were just to get a sense of how Thunderbird would work as the default client, and to gather feedback.  At a moments notice, Canonical could have backed it out and switched it back to Evolution.
..
But they’ve given their thumbs up, and they’re fully on board.

Ok guys, See you on next october

How to add Swap Space on Ubuntu

12:00 PM

Swap space in Linux is used when the amount of physical memory (RAM) is full. If the system needs more memory resources and the RAM is full, inactive pages in memory are moved to the swap space.

Swap should equal 2x physical RAM for up to 2 GB of physical RAM, and then an additional 1x physical RAM for any amount above 2 GB, but never less than 32 MB. That's formula which usually used but in practice you do not need to allocated a Swap Space when you have RAM more than 5 GB unless you run a bloody busy server, don't waste your HDD space dude :D

recently, i have experience this :
recently, i have install Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop-pc, i have lack space HDD than i decide not to make a swap space however i have 768 Mb of RAM installed on my PC. and what happen then ??
when i was browsing (in a long time), both firefox or chromium stop working periodically and i guest this swap space effect. Then i thought to make the swap space in the rest of hdd space that I have and I GOT IT!!, this solve my problem.

Follow this guide How to Make a swap space when Ubuntu (the OS) has been Installed on your PC.
  • Install GParted partition editor, GParted is such ubuntu partition tools which can use to make/allocate  free space in your HDD for use as Swap Space.

  • Format free space which has been allocated to linux-swap file system.

Gparted format to Linux-swap
  • Open your Terminal, type following command to activate your swap space swapon /dev/sda4, change /dev/sda4 to your partition.

  • you can check memory usage by type command free -m in terminal.

yes, that all. simply step above have save my ass :)

An Elementary OS launcher (slingshot) is application launcher like Mac OS application launcher which use in Elementary OS Distro (New Ubuntu Based Distro). First sight, slingshot seems like a application launcher that work on Unity but *in think Elementary OS Launcher has a better looks and appearance.
Elementary OS (Slingshot) Launcher

Elementary OS Launcher which named Slingshot is a Mac OS X style Launcher for Ubuntu and Debian Linux, much like JumpPad is for Windows. Elementary OS Launcher can be integrated to the Unity application Launcher to quickly access files and applications. See the below instructions to install and create a Unity launcher for Slingshot.

Canonical has introduced a new channel partner program, Ubuntu Advantage, which is designed to help resellers bring a new set of support services for Ubuntu server, desktop and cloud installations. Ubuntu Multi-touch Gesture Support

12:17 PM

Since ubuntu announced it's support for multitouch/multi gesture trackpad like it's write in here we're interested to try it on our new netbook which it's hardware was support multitouch.

One of my key goals for Ubuntu 11.04 has been to introduce full multitouch support through X.org. In technical terms, this means adding touch support to the XInput protocol. You may see others refer to multitouch in X.org as simply XInput 2.1. We hatched our plan back at UDS-N to push hard on developing the XInput 2.1 protocol and implementing it as best as possible in 11.04 [Chase Douglas]
.
As far as i know, Multitouch gesture is technology which bring by MacOS X in line with MacBook Pro, multitouch facilitates user to select, scroll, maximize, and minimize easily without using a mouse (CMIIW) except you can using some primitive touchpad function like drag, pinch/spread, flick, hold, rotate, and tap. This technology is very interesting and some poeple says that this is mouse killer.

Cononical have some related works which have deal with Multi-touch some of them are Utouch, ginn, and GTK/Qt libs, you can contribute by fixing bugs or making some testing and reported on their official page here.

Multi-touch Gesture Support Using Ginn
Ginn is short of "Gesture Injector: No-GEIS, No-Toolkits", such ubuntu deamon with jinn-like wish-granting capabilities, Ginn gives applications the ability to support a multi-touch gestures without having to integrate uTouch-GEIS or multi-touch-enabled GTK/Qt libraries.

Configure Ginn
Ginn is available to Unity (both in Maverick and Natty). Even if you have the uTouch stack installed and are using the GNOME Desktop, you will not get any response from the gesture recognizer (Grail) if you perform the 3- and 4-finger system gestures. If you want to just use the standard GNOME Desktop while also getting support for system gestures, you can use Ginn to assign gestures in the global section to Compiz Shortcuts.
  • Zoom out the virtual desktop (4-tap): 4-fingers-Tap -> Super+E.
          <wish gesture="Tap" fingers="4">
            <action name="action1" when="update">
              <trigger prop="tap time" min="20" max="400"/>
              <key modifier1="Super_L">E</key>
            </action>
          </wish>
  • Bring up all windows (3-pinch): 3-fingers-Pinch -> Super+W
          <wish gesture="Pinch" fingers="3">
            <action name="action4" when="update">
              <trigger prop="radius delta" min="-80" max="-50"/>
              <key modifier1="Super_L">W </key>
            </action>
          </wish>
