Install TOra - ORACLE PL/SQL Toolkit for Ubuntu

A few years ago i work on software house where in develop some application which use ORACLE as their main DBMS, although i prefer work in computer network field than database programmer, but it's never hurts to try. When i work (create some database connection) in  ubuntu, I had a little trouble and very often left with my friend, the problem is i am not accustomed to working with some database management application in ubuntu, so i leave ubuntu for a while and use Bentics. Some friend suggest me to use navicat but i don't know why it's not running smoothly.
 
A few days ago my friend told me an appliation called TOra, TOra is Oracle (PL/SQL) Toolkit that works on ubuuntu, TOra is 'relatively' close to Bentics and practically substitute of TOAD that runs on Windows OS.

TOra is an open-source multi-platform database management GUI that supports accessing most of the common database platforms in use, including Oracle, MySQL, and Postgres, as well as limited support for any target that can be accessed through Qt's ODBC support. TOra has been built for various Linux distributions, Mac OS X, MS Windows, and UNIX platforms.

Use TOra give much advantages for database administrators and developers, TOra includes several additional tools useful for database administrators and developers some features are PL/SQL debugger, SQL worksheet with syntax highlighting, DB browser and a comprehensive set of DBA tools.

There is a package in universe repository but there are no additional info id it's available with Oracle support. If you're using Ubuntu, TOra could be install trough APT or Synaptics Package Manager, you can install TOra via APT through this command :

$ sudo apt-get install libqt4-sql-mysql

Office Application

Regarding to Office (word preccessor), Since Oracle bought Sun Microsystems, many doubts were raised about the future of Openoffice, as Oracle is a name which the Free Software community was reluctant to trust. This polarization led to forking of Openoffice.org, thus giving birth to a new project called Libreoffice.Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhall will use Libre Office as Defaut Word Proccessor replace Open Office which is always used in their previous version of Ubuntu.

Regarding to Push Mail Application, Ubuntu 11.04 will launched with Thunderbird as default push mail application. Hopefully Thunderbird will be ready in a cycle or two (it misses a calendar, exchange support, integration with appmenu and messaging menu).
 

Internet Browser
The Natty Narwhall come with Firefox 4, Firefox is still favored over Chrome as the default browser in Ubuntu. Chrome still poses too many challenges for Ubuntu (the release cycle doesn’t fit well with Ubuntu Update model and also there are issues with the Global Menu integrations and so on).

Music Player 

If you ever try banshe, this music player will be included by default in Ubuntu 11.04 (and thus replace Rhythmbox). Install VirtualBox 4.0.6 via APT on Ubuntu 11.04

Setting Ubuntu with Dual / Multiple / Parallel Monitors

Whether you're in trouble to setting up dual/multiple/parallel monitors on ubuntu or something like use ubuntu for giant screen, I hope this guide will make the process relatively quick and painless. Tto perform dual/multiple monitors on ubuntu go to System -> Preferences -> Display, the action above will display the following window.
 

Ubuntu Display Preference

Note carefully the window that appears :

• If you see only one monitor, but you have more than one monitor installed 'click on Detect Monitor', it's should detect all the monitors connected to your Ubuntu.
• When you enabled 'mirror screens', both the monitors will show the same display, you can disable it if you want.
• Highlight the first monitor and click the ‘On’ radio button. if you want activated the first monitor.
• Select the Show displays in panel check-box, which will display the icon to configure the display on the top right hand panel for easy access.
• To change the display order of the monitors, simply drag the monitor to re-arrange them accordingly
• You can also change your monitor rotation, Click 'Rotation' to rotate your monitor 180° or 90°.

You can (also) perform ubuntu dual/multiple/parallel monitors using third party driver/application, such as:

•     Xinerama (open source and binary driver)
•     nVidia-only TwinView (binary driver)
•     ATI, Matrox MergedFB (open source driver)
•     ATI-only BigDesktop (binary driver)

All options above perform the same function. However, because of the variations of graphics cards in the market,sometimes give various result.
Feature Differences:

Xinerama is an extension to the X Window System which allows applications and window managers to use the two, or more, physical displays as one large virtual display.” --Wikipedia. In other words, it allows X, as we'll call the X Window System, to use more than one monitor for display.       

• Pros: Since Xinerama is an extension of X, most graphics cards, including Intel Integrated Cards and Matrox Cards, work well with it.
• Cons: There are several known problems with Xinerama. It requires that the physical screens to have the same bit depth. Also in most implementations, OpenGL (3D) direct-rendering only works on one of the screns. Windows that should show 3D graphics on other screens tend to just appear black. However, the Solaris SPARC OpenGL implementation allows direct rendering to all screens in Xinerama mode.

TwinView is a mode of operation where two display devices (digital flat panels, CRTs, and TVs) can display the contents of a single X screen in any arbitrary configuration.” -TwinView Appendix G.

• Pros: Twinview merges two screens into one, “tricking” X to think that there is only one screen. This always provide better OpenGL direct-rendering.
• Cons: TwinView requires the binary nVidia Driver, which means only nVidia cards are supported.

Merged Framebuffer mode allows you to use 3D acceleration on both heads of a dualheaded Radeon card.” --MergedFB Wiki

• Pros: Similar to TwinView, MergedFB merges two screens into one, therefore supporting 3D direct-rendering on both screens.
• Cons: MergedFB only works with the open sources drivers (mga, ati, , which lack direct-rendering support for many Radeon models. MergedFB also limits 3D contexts to 2048x2048.

BigDesktop allows for dual screen control by merging the 2 screens into one single screen, allowing direct rendering on both monitors.

Common Step for Each HowTo:

These steps are essential for the HowTos to work, please follow them precisely.
All commands give should be executed within terminal.

BackUp File:
Perhaps the most important step of them all. Since we are going to be editing a system file that have the potential, in the instance of an accident, to disable your Xserver (aka No GUI/Mouse Function), it is EXTREMELY important to execute this command:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup

The function of this command is to make a backup copy of your Xorg.conf file (which we'll be editing soon).

If for any reason, after the guide, you are unable to activate Xserver, execute the following command:

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Now, we always want to have a clean slate, because it makes the work much easier, and there is less of a chance that some other arbitrary item will mess this whole thing up.
So, unplug all your monitors except for one, then execute the following command:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Just hit enter for the most options, though if you have the binary drivers installed, you might want to select that. This code will generate a new, clean, standard xorg.conf file for us to work on.

LibreOfiice 3.3 PPA Repository; Install LibreOffice via apt-get

Finally LibreOffice  got a PPA which now makes it very easier to install and stay up to date with the latest LibreOffice versions. LibreOffice 3.3 has come up with new exciting features  import and bundled extensions which provide PDF import, a slide-sow presenter console and more services. It also works with SVG files. Follow these steps to install LibreOfiice 3.x via apt-get install :

Remove OpenOffice from your system

sudo apt-get remove openoffice*.*

Add LibreOffice PPA - Lauchpad Repository

this repository can be use in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx, 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and 11.04 Natty Narwhal:

Install LibreOffice use following command

To get better compatibility with your desktop environment, also install following package

Vinux : Ubuntu with Screen Reader and Braille display Support

You must be familiar with Ubuntu, well, maybe have been used it as alternative operating system in a PCs or Laptops. Obviously not only sighted people has interested in Linux, but also visually impaired people want to taste it. Generally, blind people used to operate a Windows-besed OS with screen readers when he works, plays, and studies on their computer, however screen readers which it's function change the text that appears on the monitor to output as a sound is quite expensive, about $ 800 to $ 1200, they have to spend money for it. Don't worry, Regarding to that problems Vinux give solutions and you don't have to pay even only 1 penny.

Vinux is a remastered version of Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat which optimised for the needs of blind and partially sighted people. By default it provides three screen-readers, two full-screen magnifiers, global font-size and colour changing facilities as well as support for USB Braille displays. It can be run from a Live CD without making any changes to your hard drive. If you like it you can install to a USB pendrive or to your hard drive either alongside Windows, or as a complete replacement for it. How to Make Automatic System Shutdown (halt) in Ubuntu

Few days ago I have trouble in sleeping, then i have idea what if I turn the music on so I can fell a sleep soon, a moment later questions arise "who would turn off my laptop, when I was sleeping ?", quickly I look for the solution..

we can use linux basic commands to perform automatic system shutdown in ubuntu or even to switch the system on again. here is the command what i mean:

shutdown -h <desire time>

The command above can be use in two ways, that is:

 Automatic system shutdown (halt) using exact hour and minute/hh:mm.

example: shutdown -h 21:00

the command above will make system automatically shutdown a the time 09:00 PM

Automatic system shutdown (halt) a few minutes after command executed 

example: shutdown -h +60

the command above will make system automatically shutdown 60 Minutes after a command executed

if explanation above isn't clear, Here is some example  step by step how to make automatic shutdown (halt) in ubuntu by the time 11:00 PM

• Open terminal, Applications > Accessories > terminal (or press Ctrl + Alt + T )
• Go to #root mode ( type 'su'  in your terminal then enter your #root password)

Install Oracle OpenOffice 3.3 from PPA ( apt-get install )

Install OpenOffice 3.3 from PPA (Via apt-get install or Synaptics Package Manager)

• Add OpenOffice 3.3 PPA repository top your package database

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:openoffice-pkgs/ppa

• Get update your package repository info by this command

If you are using Gnome Type the command:

Problems that usually occur is system (network manager) can't browse available access point, regarding to this problem you can solve by adding wireless connection manually using the correct access point name and wireless security key. Other way, you can search access point trough terminal using iwconfig or iwlist, see the exemple bellow.

$ iwconfig eth1

the result should be like this

Compaq Presario CQ62 No Sound

The common problem is laptop no sound or if the speakers are not working but the headphones are, you can follow the instruction bellow, do with command line :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa
sudo apt-get update
Install the linux-alsa-driver-modules package
sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)

Backlight Brightness Control not working

Some of compaq presario have experience with this problem, foremost laptops that running Ubuntu under 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat), we got a lot of answers in a forum but sometime not work properly. the main problem is the GNOME itself, you can fix it by re-installing GNOME or try to install new version of your distro (Ubuntu 11.04 maybe), other way we have tricky solution that usually work, do with command line under #root.

echo -n 50 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness

50 is percentage of brightness, you can replace the 50 with: 37 12 25 37 50 62 75 87 or 100. After doing some action above, don't forget to reboot your laptop and your problems should be solved after that (i hope so).
